What Does Madonna, Brad Pitt, and the Supreme Court Have in Common?

Brad PittI graduated from high school in May 1975 and began my freshman year at college in August of that same year.  During the fall semester, the gay rights activists on campus set aside a day that they designated as “Gay Day.”  They put an announcement in the school newspaper that on Gay Day, anyone who was in support of gay rights should show their support by wearing jeans to class.  At that time, there were over 20,000 students attending classes at the university, and approximately 80 percent of them wore jeans to class every day.

Where Do You Draw The Line?

A few years ago one of my injury clients, Jane, called and told me that she had recently ended a homosexual relationship and was being harassed by her former partner, Jenifer.*  During the time they were together, Jane and Jennifer lived in Jennifer’s house and split the household expenses.  They also shared a small dog that Jennifer had given to Jane as a gift.

The Unraveling of a Culture

Last weekend at the Kapow Comic Convention in London, a representative of DC Comics announced that one of its previously “straight” superheroes was going to come out as being gay.  When ABC News later asked Courtney Simmons, DC’s Senior Vice President of Publicity, about the announcement, she confirmed that “one of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June.”  In a separate interview, Bobby Wayne, the senior Vice President for Sales, said that the company “had evolved,” a reference to President Obama’s recent endorsement of same-sex “marriage.”

The Tavern Owners Club

Did you know that at one time Peoria was known as the “Whiskey Capital” of Illinois?  According to a PeoriaMagazines.com article written by Jerry Klein, between 1837 and 1919, there were 24 breweries and 73 distilleries in Peoria.  In another publication, “A Brief History of Peoria,” published by C.A. Cockle in 1896, it was noted that out of all of the breweries in Peoria, three of them had the lions’ share of the beer market: Gipps Brewing Co., Leisy Brewing Co. and Union Brewing Co.

Does The Name Really Matter?

When I graduated from a public high school 36 years ago (1975), no one in high school talked openly about homosexuality.  There were some rumors about one of our teachers, but that was it.  If there were any students who were homosexual, nobody knew about it because it was never discussed.
